ITINERARY
SUNSET VISIT TO A LOCAL FARM (OVERLOOK), SEARCH FOR CAIMANS AND CAPYBARAS
In Tambopata, there are various legal economic activities, with tropical agriculture being one of the most important. This morning, we will learn about the seasonal crops that help some families make a living. In the afternoon, we will set out in search of the world’s largest rodents, the capybaras. They are usually found on the riverbanks where the Tambopata National Reserve borders the river, so hunting them is prohibited.
While exploring the river in search of these adorable animals, we might encounter white and black caimans, among other species. But the most captivating part of this program is the sunset. We are fortunate to be located right where the sun dips below the horizon at the end of the day.
Night Walk. After settling into our rooms, we will have dinner and take a night walk around our lodge to observe spiders, tarantulas, scorpions, and other insects.
Brazil Nut Trail, Night Hike, Parrot Clay Licks
Very early in the morning, at 5:00 AM, we wake up to visit the clay clay licks where hundreds of green parrots come to feed. After breakfast, we will visit the Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa) grove.
In the Amazon, there are more than 1.2 million Brazil nut trees, or Bertholletia excelsa, spread across 2.5 million hectares, 20% of which are located within the Tambopata National Reserve.
To reach these giant trees, we will embark on a 3- to 4-hour hike along well-maintained trails. The Brazil nut grove is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including the agouti, one of the few animals capable of opening the nuts and dispersing their seeds with great skill.
Night Hike: After settling into our rooms, we will have dinner and take a night hike around our lodge to observe spiders, tarantulas, scorpions, and other insects. This is one of the most anticipated activities for our visitors, as it offers the most beautiful view of the starry night in the rainforest, accompanied by a bonfire and some stories from our Amazon region.
LAKE YACUMAMA (PIRANHA FISHING)
After breakfast, we prepare for our visit to Lake Yacumama, one of the main attractions of the Madama community. This beautiful lake is surrounded by lush water hyacinths that grow along its shores and provide refuge for dozens of bird species. During your visit, you can participate in various activities such as piranha fishing, observing different species of macaws roosting in dead palm trees, and enjoying the view of this beautiful lake.
After lunch, we return to Puerto Maldonado.
