Tambopata National Reserve
The Tambopata National Reserve is a biodiversity gem in Madre de Dios, Peru, renowned for its accessible Amazon rainforest, rivers (Malinowski, Tambopata, Madre de Dios), and lakes like Sandoval, home to giant river otters, macaws at clay licks (Chuncho, Colorado), monkeys, caimans, and an incredible variety of birds and butterflies. To visit, you fly to Puerto Maldonado and travel downriver; it is crucial to hire authorized agencies to explore its different sectors (Sandoval, Middle, and Upper Tambopata) and observe unique wildlife such as macaws at clay licks and otters in the lake.
